A great number of tourism facilities of various types in different locations throughout Europe do not yet have an adequate sewage treatment system or need to improve the existing one. Connection to a sewer main is often not feasible or at least not the best option, either because the site is too isolated or because there is no collective wastewater treatment. Decentralised sewage treatment, on the other hand, has to cope with particular problems. SWAMP intends to develop decentralised but integrated water and wastewater management systems solving the related problems, e.g.
  • high seasonal and/or weekly wastewater flows and load variations,
  • lack of water supply,
  • lack of receiving waters,
  • low maintenance capabilities of owners,
  • natural environment deserving special protection.
