"Nicola" service area on the highway
Problems to solve
"Nicola" service area is located nearby the highway Kaunas-Klaipeda in Lithuania. Sea level: 77 m. Lithuania is considered as the country of cold climate. Precipitation amount is 670 mm, average air temperature is 6.2°C. The coldest month is January (-5.1°C). Average air temperatures are: in winter -4°C, in spring 5.5°C, in summer 16°C, in autumn 7°C. In winter period snow cover is 10-20 cm deep, frozen ground reaches 50-70 cm deep.
Buildings of the "Nikola" service area are situated on both sides of the highway. The main building containing a café and dwelling rooms is located on one side of the highway. On the other side there is a smaller café and a separate washroom for passers-by. Wastewater amount is changing within the range of 3 to 12 m
3/d here. The smallest wastewater amounts are observed in winter period, the highest rates occur in summer. Wastewater amount also depends on the day of the week. Weekends and holidays are distinct for larger wastewater amounts compared to workdays. The initial wastewater pollution concentration before the treatment process is rather high and is changing within the range of 300 to 700 mg O
2/l according to BOD
5.
Currently, the wastewater is being collected into special tanks and is transported into wastewater treatment facilities situated at the distance of 10 km. In order to reduce the expenses on wastewater treatment process a reed bed filter is being constructed here.
